KT is going into the non-fungible token (NFT) business in earnest. It plans to utilize KT Group's capabilities in all directions, including the images of players belonging to clubs under KT Sports, the intellectual property rights (IP) of webtoon content owned by Storywiz, a company specializing in KT web novels and webtoons, and the hotel use rights of KT Estate.

Issuance of sports star NFT

On the 22nd, KT announced that it would issue ‘Odaejang NFT’ every month from the 24th to October through its own NFT platform MINCL. It is based on the sports marketing project ‘Ojangjang’ IP, which consists of five popular sports stars who belong to the KT club or are sponsored by KT, such as Lee Kang-in, Kang Baek-ho, Sohn Joon-joon, Heo Hoon, and Yang Hong-seok.

This NFT is linked to Klaytn's exclusive wallet Kaikas. Through KT's Mincle platform, NFTs can be applied for and minted, and can be traded when the NFT trading platform is opened by linking Kaikas. KT plans to add a transmission function to the Mincle platform in the future.

The 1st edition of the Five Captains Begins, which will be issued at the end of this month, is the first official NFT attempt. A total of 6 images are made into NFTs, and a total of 600 NFTs are issued, each with 100 images. A sports illustrator, Kwang-ga, participated in the image work. The 1st edition is issued through an airdrop method through application. The target is those who have installed the Mincle app and applied for the Five Captain NFT. Applications are accepted from the 24th to the 8th of the following month.

KT plans to conduct NFT marketing through baseball team ktwiz. On the 26th, at Suwon KT Wiz Park, where the game against the LG Twins will be held, the NFT video of Captain Oh will be released to the audience who visited the baseball field. There is also an event to provide baseballs signed by KT Wiz's baseball players Kang Baek-ho and Sohn So-jun.

In order to create initial holding value, it targets ‘fan heart’. The idea is to provide an opportunity to apply for a fan meeting at the end of the year for holders who have collected at least one of the five NFTs issued over five times. Kim Yeong-soo, head of the digital asset development team in charge of blockchain technology at KT, said, “If you issue NFTs with the contents of popular sports stars in active play, you can achieve three factors: differentiation, scarcity, and ownership.”

“Within KT Group Asset NFT within the year”

In the second half of this year, KT will make KT's group assets into NFTs. In August, in cooperation with KT Alpha, a digital home shopping group company, KT Wiz will introduce a limited edition sneaker NFT signed by Kang Baek-ho.

It is also considering issuing hotel vouchers for KT Estate or offering NFTs based on the IP of players belonging to KT Sports. To this end, the Mincle platform payment and settlement service will be upgraded to expand the range of assets that can be made into NFTs. A KT official said, "KT will expand the application of NFTs to group assets to make the most of the KT group's various assets and capabilities and increase corporate value."
