As gamers all over the world enjoy games across time and space through the Internet and mobile, games are no longer content for individual consumption, but are moving toward comprehensive entertainment in which everyone participates. The technological trends leading this change are Web 3.0 and non-fungible tokens (NFT) based on blockchain.

At Galabus Europe 2022 held in Malta, an island country located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, it was possible to experience the world of a new game platform based on Web 3.0, the technical basis for user participation, and NFTs that guarantee the value of buyers.

Gala Bus is a game festival held by Gala Games, which has the world's 4th largest market capitalization in game coins. Gala Games is a blockchain game platform company founded in 2018 by Eric Schermeier, co-founder of Zynga, a byword for social games. The blockchain game platform of Gala Games is a large platform visited by 1.3 million monthly visitors and serves various blockchain-based games such as Town Star and Spider Tank. In particular, it is differentiated from other game platforms with a unique participation and compensation model called node sales, and it is revitalizing the community by giving various benefits, such as giving priority to NFT purchases used in the game, mainly to participants who have purchased nodes.

◆ Chasing the two hares of blockchain games, diversity and success

There are two main cards released by Gala Games at Gala Bus Europe 2022. The first is to diversify the block chain game genre, which was a one-size-fits-all structure of investment, training, and compensation, from blockbuster AAA-level games to sports games with strong maniacs.

Project Saturn, a game unveiled on the first day of the event, is a blockchain game that uses Battlestar Galactica, a world-famous sci-fi universe. When the OST of the Battlestar Galactica drama was released at the public site, the fans all went wild and welcomed the new blockbuster game. The game is developed jointly by Gala Games, NBC Universal, and Revolving Games, and is made in the 4X strategy game genre that has recently emerged as a mainstream game trend.

The game that attracted attention along with Battlestar Galactica was Freestyle Football 2, the representative work of the sports game genre that Joy City introduced in six years. The day after the event, Joy City made a surprise announcement that Freestyle had joined the camp of Gala Games. In the meantime, character cards of famous soccer players or fan tokens of soccer teams have appeared, but Freestyle Football 2 is the first case in which a sports game itself is blockchainized. Joy City is confident that it will create a new attraction by combining well with blockchain while maintaining the unique fun of the sports game genre.

◆ Korean game going out to the world with blockchain on its back

Backed by user participation called Web 3.0, games of various genres appeared on Gala Bus, but the games that attracted attention were actually the works of Korean game developers. It was a moment when Korea's game soft power showed its strength in participatory games developed with Web 3.0 and NFT, befitting its status as the world's leading country of online games. Round 2, which brought not only Joy City's freestyle football 2, but also tower defense games, a mainstream mobile game genre, One Universe, which moved collectible role-playing games (RPGs) to blockchains and NFTs, and End, which combined war simulation games and NFTs. Lim and others were welcomed by the Gala Games community.

Korea's strength is not limited to game development. About 160 of the 800 total participants in the Gala Bus, which was counted by Gala Games, are Koreans. These are the buyers of the Gala Games node and others who are willing to participate in the community with a bright future for blockchain games. About 60 Gala Games community leaders who met at the site said, "The main focus of our meeting is not Gala Games consumers, but participants through node purchases."

Gala Games revealed that Korean game companies can play a leading role in spreading a game culture based on participation. "Korean game companies have a very high level of understanding of Web 3.0 compared to other countries," said John Oswald, general manager of Gala Games.
