Cho Seong Min, CEO of Sandol Meta Lab

Utilization of the largest number of font copyrights in Korea
A goal is platform for creators

"Sandol's ultimate goal is to go beyond a font design company and become a platform for creators."

The dream of Sandol Metalab CEO Cho Seong Min, whom I recently met at the office in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, is to leap forward to become a platform where everyone can benefit together.

Sandol Meta Lab is a subsidiary of the Korean font company 'Sandol' in charge of AI technology development. Sandol is well known as a company that created basic Korean fonts for major operating systems(OS) such as Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. Sandoll also created exclusive fonts for companies large and small, such as Hyundai Card and BAEMIN.

The first is the non-fungible token(NFT) business. It is to make and sell Korean ltters as NFT to foreigners who have become interested in Korea through K-pop, as well as Koreans who like Hangeul. CEO Cho said, “At first, I thought of investing in Sandol’s font copyrights separately in the same way that Music Cow sells music copyrights separately," but "Judging that there is a legal risk, I decided to start lightly by reducing the scale of the project and selling Korean letters." Currently, about 130 investors own Hangeul, Korean letters in Sandoll's 'Geokdong Gothic' font.

The second is an AI-based font recognition service. If you take a picture of a signboard or poster you see around you and upload it to Sandol Cloud, it automatically recognizes the font used and informs you. CEO Cho said, "Sandoll's strength in developing this service is that it has a lot of data to be used for AI learning," and added, "It's because we own more font copyrights than any other company in Korea."
Sandol Meta Lab plans to focus on creating auxiliary tools for creators active on YouTube and TikTok in the future. It plans to expand its business area to a platform that provides pictures, videos, music, etc. necessary for anyone to easily and simply create creations.
