Celebrating its 300th anniversary this year, the Belvedere Museum of Art held a special love confession event on Valentine's Day in February. He made lovers kiss in front of Gustav Klimt's "Kiss" painting and filmed it. There was a long line of lovers, and the NFT (Non-Replaceable Token) owner of "The Kiss" gave them a "preferential treatment" not to stand in line." [Voiceover] Hello, Stephanie. I'm Kim Sun-mi, a reporter in charge of the Future & Startup Team of the Dong-A Ilbo. Recently, I heard how to confess love in the digital age at a press conference invited by the Austrian Embassy in Korea. I went to the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria, six years ago. I remember taking a commemorative photo in front of the "Kiss" painting outside the exhibition room because photography was not allowed. What's going on in the Belvedere.

Wolfgang Bergman, managing director of the Belvedere Museum of Art, who attended the meeting, explained the Belvedere Museum's NFT project. The museum teamed up with NFT startup Artecu to showcase Klimt's "Kiss" as an NFT work last year. High-resolution digital copies are made of 100 pieces by 100 pieces by 100 pieces, a total of 10,000 non-replicable NFT pieces, and sold for 1,850 euros (about 2.6 million won) per piece, and more than 2,600 pieces have been sold so far. Following the lead of the Belvedere Museum of art, the Leopold Museum of art in Austria also sold Egon Schile's paintings as NFT works.

The "Kiss" NFT work, which divides the "Kiss" work into 10,000 pieces, has a different charm from the original "Kiss." It can be a gold painting with dots, or a red flower painting, depending on the sculpture you collect. Here's a question. Why is the Belvedere Museum selling this NFT. Because it's a non-profit organization, all of the proceeds are reinvested in art education that discovers the second Klimt.

The Belvedere Museum of Art explains this. "I think the museum, which has historically been a conservative place, needs innovation. To do so, communication with young customers was essential. As a cultural institution at the forefront of the digital flow, it took the first step with the metaverse. The broad interest shown by art collectors around the world in this project confirms that our decision to focus on NFTs at the right time was right."

The Belvedere Museum of Art says it has secured two new customer lines through this 'Kiss' NFT project. Art lovers who have never collected NFT works so far, Web 3.0 natives who were already interested in NFT topics. In particular, 1,800 of the 2,600 people who have purchased this NFT work so far are overseas buyers, not Austria, and the harvest is the creation of an international community.

Ahn Won-kyung, Korean representative of Stylus, a British trend information company, said, "Consumers can gain artistic comfort by owning Klimt's 'Kiss' in the form of NFTs that the public cannot have because it is in the collection of the National Museum."

The Belvedere Art Museum's transformation efforts are not limited to NFTs. Since two years ago, we have been working with Samsung Electronics to showcase 17 items, including Klimt's "Kiss," on Samsung Electronics' "The Frame" TV's exclusive work subscription service app, "Art Store." It is a service that can be used as your own 'home gallery' by displaying artworks on the screen when you are not watching TV. The museum recently collaborated with local fashion designer Lee Sang-bong to present a fashion stage that combines Klimt's works at Seoul Fashion Week on the 19th.

Back to NFT, as you know, the NFT market has shrunk in size and atmosphere in the past two years due to the collapse of the FTX exchange and the Terra and Luna crisis. However, NFT technology and coins are different. Rather, it is said that there is an atmosphere in which NFTs are finding value as the market bubble falls out. Some predict that NFTs could be issued in the form of token securities as the Financial Services Commission recently announced a policy to allow tangible and intangible assets such as art and music copyrights to be invested in pieces using blockchain technology.

Recently, while watching foreign media, I came across an interesting expression called 'NFT lipstick effect'. Originally, the "lipstick effect" came from the United States in the 1930s, during the Great Depression, and is a business term that means "small luxury" with relatively cheap cosmetics such as lipstick when the consumption economy is bad. It's too much to buy expensive new clothes to refresh yourself with cosmetics. The "NFT lipstick effect" using this term means that you enjoy artistic satisfaction through relatively low-priced NFT works instead of expensive artworks. The impact of COVID-19 in the 2020s was never less than that of the Great Depression in the 1930s.

The museum's transformation efforts through NFT works are not unique to Austria. The Pompidou Center in Paris, France, the largest contemporary art museum in Europe, announced last month that it will collect 18 NFT works by 13 artists from around the world and display them this spring. This is the first time that the museum, which opened in 1977 and attracts 5 million visitors a year, has introduced its own collection of NFTs. Analysts say that the Pompidou Center's move has made NFTs not just digital collections but also recognized their artistic value. The Pompidou Center said, "It's interesting to see if creativity starts outside the art world or in the professional realm of digital art and slowly echoes into the contemporary art world," adding, "The NFT will consist of a collection of conceptual and minimalist art."

"NFT Art" is sometimes criticized for its poor artistry due to the logic of capital. What's certain, anyway, is that global art galleries are open to the NFT for change and innovation. These days, when art and technology are combined quickly and in various ways, I hope that healthy discussions on NFT art will take place actively.
