"Zara Island Jazz Festival," which celebrates its 20th anniversary next year,

The first summit in three years this year.

"Pets with dogs," "Metaverse performance," "NFT ticket sales," and "use eco-friendly wires for all performances."

First attempt at a large outdoor music festival in Korea

The 19th Jarasum Jazz Festival, the largest jazz music festival in Korea, will be held from October 1 to 3. It will hold the event by increasing the audience size, which had been reduced since the pandemic, to the existing normal size for the first time in three years.

Every fall, Jarasum Island in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do, becomes a huge jazz club. Starting in 2004, the jazz festival will be held for the 15th time this year to attract musicians from all over the world. Gapyeong was reborn as a music village with the cooperation of the military and musicians who started to save the region with a new project. The economic effect of the festival amounts to 46 billion won.

On the 22nd, organizers of the Jarasum Festival unveiled the final list of 19 overseas teams and 13 domestic teams and detailed festival schedules at this year's festival. The festival, which began in 2004 around Jarasum Island in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, has been well-received as a representative jazz festival not only in Korea but also in Asia by showcasing outstanding performers. During the 18th episode, 1,200 musicians from 58 countries went through and attracted 20,000 audiences a year to Gapyeong. However, in the 17th episode of 2020, when social distancing was strengthened, it was opened only online without an audience, and in the 18th episode, the number of daily visitors was limited to 2,000.

◇ Brilliant return in 3 years, brilliant lineup

As it will be held normally for the first time in three years this year, jazz fans are saying that they have sharpened the knife from casting the cast.

The overseas team will first feature "Joy Alexander," who was born in 2003 and has earned the nickname "ShinDong" with only three nominations for the Grammy Award at the leading U.S. awards ceremony. Jazmier Horn, a candidate for the 60th Grammy Awards' Best Vocal Album, and Trumpeter Abishai Koen, an Israeli and German-born ECM label, were also named.

It is also regrettable to miss "Piano Porte," a super piano band composed of four star pianists who drew the highest praise in Europe, Battist Trotignon (France), Boyan Zee (Serbia), Eric Lenini (Belgium), and Pierre de Betman (France). If you are attracted to some innovative sounds, I recommend the jazz group EABS, which combines Polish jazz, classical music, and hip-hop, and the jazz group Sketchbu Quartet, which works in Vienna across various genres.

The "Focus Program," which the festival has been making since 2010, is also an indispensable delicacy. Every year, a country is selected and its jazz music is presented in collaboration with its own folk music, history and food. This year, 'Spain' was selected. Popular European pianist Daniel Garcia, Barencia, which combines Spanish traditional folk music flamengo and jazz, and jazz trio Sumra, which represents the Galasia region of Spain, will present performances that will immerse Spain's charm.

The domestic cast is also formidable. Singer Kim Hyun-chul, a former "Dong-A Planning" who produced many genius musicians in the 1980s and led the rise of fusion jazz in Korea, jazz vocalist Lee Ji-min, who was praised for his unique music world, and jazz trio "Spring in Winter" which swept various jazz awards. It is also noteworthy that the explosive tagan performance will be performed by four keyboardists, including Seo Tae-ji, "Dachs Kim," who received a love call from BTS, and Jeon Yong-joon, Jeon Sang-min, and Shim Kyu-min.

◇ Korea's longest jazz festival ahead of its 20th anniversary

This year, the Jarasum Jazz Festival is especially active as a jazz festival preparing for the 20th anniversary in Korea. To this end, new attempts that have not been challenged in the past 19 years will also be introduced.

Following the "Jara Island Camping Site Package Ticket," which made headlines by allowing people to enjoy camping and watch music performances for the first time in Korea in the past, this year, it will provide new experiences to audiences with "Pets with Dogs." On a trial basis, only 100 seats were opened a day during the three-day festival, allowing audiences to freely enjoy jazz music with their pets. Some tickets are also issued as 'NFT' tickets, which can be exclusively owned. It also offers Zara Island highlights only to NFT ticket buyers. All tickets can be purchased through the online travel reservation site 'Tourvis (air.tourvis.com)'.

During the performance, the Metaverse Jazz Performance will also be held. The plan is to allow visitors to enjoy the performances of some musicians who turned into avatars during the festival on Naver's metaverse platform "ZEP." In addition, various metaverse contents will be released during the festival, including a "backstage tour" that explores the back of offline field performance halls and a conversation time between artists and audiences.

This year, some festival performances will also be held at a market in downtown Gapyeong-gun for co-prosperity with Gapyeong-gun, which has provided a venue for the festival. Strategies to revitalize local commercial districts and maximize the local experience of the audience. The change of all wires used in the festival venue into recyclable "green" materials is also a new attempt to introduce them from this year to create a sustainable festival.

"When I first created this festival, I made it with the theme of nature, family, and rest music, and the theme remains unchanged," said In Jae-jin, general director of the Jarasum Jazz Festival. "I hope the Jarasum Jazz Festival will be a sustainable and healthy youth-like festival in 20, 30, and 40 years."
